Britain’s top professional cycling teams will battle it out on Colchester’s streets on Thursday 30 May 2013 for Round Six of The Pearl Izumi Tour Series.

This year The Pearl Izumi Tour Series road race will begin and end outside Colchester’s Town Hall as usual but 2013 brings some exciting changes to the circuit that will make the route even more challenging for the cycling professionals.

The race route takes cyclists from the Town Hall, along the High Street, a left turn into Head Street and into St John’s Street, as in previous years, but then the elite racers will take a sharp left and then right from St John’s Street into Vineyard Gate car park before they join St Botolph’s Street, speed up Queen Street and along the High Street to the finish line.

“Fans can look forward to seeing this country’s best male and female cyclists racing on the new look circuit,” said Series Race Director Mick Bennett.

“The small change will keep things fresh and make the warm-up for both races all important in learning the new circuit.”

Attending the photocall were (left to right in photo), Owen Lake from the team who will ride in Colchester as a guest team, Joe Perrett (Team IG Sigma Sport), Russell Hampton (Team Raleigh) and Andrew Griffiths (Team IG Sigma Sport).

Look out for interviews and more content from the photocall over the coming week.

The thrilling street-racing around the town centre will take place from 5.30pm when the Johnson Health Tech Grand Prix Series women’s and there will be even more action-packed racing from 7.30pm as more international and national cycling stars take to the streets for the men’s Pearl Izumi Tour Series race.

The circuit loop is repeated around 25 times over the course of the hour’s race and the teams will be battling to place their top riders as high as possible in the finishing positions in order to gain their maximum squad points.

Cllr Lyn Barton, Portfolio holder for Renaissance said, “Building on the success and excitement of last summers cycling events at the Olympics we are delighted to be hosting The Pearl Izumi Tour Series for the fourth time. This event, the change to the track and surrounding activities in Castle Park will attract thousands of people to Colchester again for a world class racing event. It is a great opportunity for us all to get involved and celebrate Colchester as a place where people want to live, work and visit.”
