SweetSpot are delighted to announce that Domestique: The Real Life Ups and Downs of a Tour Pro, the autobiography of Charly Wegelius is the first winner of the annual SweetSpot Cycling Book of the Year Award.

The Award was voted for by the public during December 2013, with almost 1,000 visitors to TheTour.co.uk voting on an initial shortlist of 12 titles.

Wegelius’ tale of the behind the scenes life of a pro-cyclist, written in conjunction with fellow former rider Tom Southam, took 22% of the vote.

It’s All About The Bike, the autobiography of Sean Yates came second, with ITV cycling presenter Ned Boulting’s On the Road Bike: The Search for a Nation’s Cycling Soul coming third.

Commenting on the announcement, Charly Wegelius said,

“We are delighted to win the SweetSpot Cycling Book of the Year Award. It is particularly pleasing that this is an award that was voted for by the general public, as that is a real measure of opinion on the book.

“I’m also very happy for my co-writer Tom Southam to be recognised for all his work on the book, and I hope that it is the beginning of a great writing career for him.”

During a 12-year professional career Wegelius rode for some of the world’s top trade teams, including Mapei Quick-Step and Liquigas, as well as representing Great Britain at Olympics and World Championships, and England at the Commonwealth Games. He retired at the end of 2011, joining Garmin Sharp as Directeur Sportif, with Domestique being published last Summer.

“We are delighted to the response, from the public and the authors and their publishers to the first SweetSpot Cycling Book of the Year Award,” said SweetSpot Chief Executive Hugh Roberts.

“Our congratulations go to Charly for winning the first edition of the Award, which we hope will grow into a prestigious annual prize for the best cycling writing over years to come.”

The Award and prizes will be presented at The Tour of Britain National Launch at the end of March, while details of the 2014 SweetSpot Cycling Book of the Year Award will be announced in the Autumn.

Entries for SweetSpot’s new mountain bike event, XCALIBRE – Britain’s ultimate off-road Tour – are now open, with two-rider teams able to sign-up for the unique off-road event between 16th and 23rd August. For more information visit www.xcalibremtb.co.uk
