A downhill mountain bike race will form part of the Aberystwyth Cycle Fest, headlined by The Pearl Izumi Tour Series on Friday 24th May.

Now in its fourth year, the Aberystwyth Cycle Festival is expanded to three days for 2013 and brings Downhill Mountain biking and a ‘Welsh Wild West’ sportive to the famous promenade to add to the already established Pearl Izumi Tour Series televised pro criterium race.

Constitution Hill – Conquer the Cliff

Saturday May 25th sees Round Two of the MIJ Welsh downhill series taking place at a totally new destination on the Welsh downhill calendar.

Overlooking the town from the north, with a challenging route to the summit for any walker, Constitution Hill is usually climbed via the Funicular Railway, which stems from Victorian times when the town began its tradition of being a popular seaside resort. The railway is still functional and will act as the uplift on race day, taking riders to the cliff summit which features a large café restaurant which will also act as Race HQ on the day.

Town Centre atmosphere

With the finish line of the route on the famous Aberystwyth promenade, and only metres away from popular entertainment venues and restaurants such as the Royal Pier, Baravin and Glengower Hotel, spectators and competitors are urged to make a weekend of it, as both the Friday and Saturday evenings promise to provide great entertainment with The Peal Izumi Tour Series televised Pro race and Welsh Wild West Sportive also taking place.

The route

The downhill race is capped at 200 places and the route provides a short and sharp descent into town starting at the London 2012 Olympic torch beacon at the cliff summit, descending past the ‘Consti Café’, twisting down via two railway bridges and onto another five switchbacks before a long row of steps taking riders onto the finish straight.

Top times are expected to be at around the 1-minute mark and there are expected to be many spectators on the cliff and down at the pit/expo area at Victoria Terrace at the finish zone.

Practice begins mid morning with first race runs from 1pm. Please check the MIJ Website for further competitor info.
