Almost a year on from her last appearance in the Matrix Fitness Grand Prix Series, Jess Roberts returned in the same fashion taking an impressive solo win at the first race at the new Wembley Park presented by Jurys Inn round.

The Liv Epic Coaching rider, who won the final event of 2016 in Portsmouth, took victory under the watchful gaze of the Wembley arch by almost 8.5-seconds from a chasing group containing the Drops, Breeze and WNT riders fighting for the overall team prize.

Aggressive throughout, Roberts had made a number of attempts to go clear, but it wasn’t until a handful of laps remained that she managed to escape, and with no company from any of the teams aiming for the Matrix Fitness GP Series title, was able to make good her escape.

Behind it was the same story as the opening three rounds, with a ferocious battle between leader’s Drops and rivals Team Breeze and Team WNT all among the 11-rider chasing group.  With Drops riders Rebecca Durrell and Alice Barnes taking second and fourth, with Breeze’s Emily Nelson sandwiched in between, the team win on the night went the way of the Series leaders to extend their lead.

Drops now have a nine point lead at the halfway point in the Series, but such is the close competition this year that the lead could be wiped away in just one event.  Team WNT have faded slightly to 41-points of the lead, but remain in third.

Individually the close battle continues, with Durrell two points ahead of Nelson, and Irish Champion Lydia Boylan a further eleven points back.

Team Breeze’s Ellie Dickinson holds onto the Eisberg Sprints jersey, two-points ahead of Durrell, while Barnes claimed another Brother Fastest Lap trophy to add to her growing collection.
