Britain’s leading televised cycle race series, The Tour Series, will return to Aberystwyth for a third successive Summer in May, headlining an action packed weekend of cycling in the Welsh resort.

The UK’s top professional teams will head to Aberystwyth on Friday 24th May for Round Four of the 2013 season, with the likes of Olympic Champion Ed Clancy and The Tour of Britain’s SKODA King of the Mountains winner Kristian House both former winners of the Welsh event.

Cllr Ellen ap Gwynn, Leader of Ceredigion County Council, said;

“I’m so pleased to see that Aberystwyth is once again able to host popular cycling events. The race last year was well supported by locals and by the cycling enthusiasts who came from afar to cheer all the competitors and the children’s event. The seafront and promenade is an excellent backdrop and venue to welcome competitors to Aberystwyth.”

Professor Martin Jones, Pro Vice-Chancellor at Aberystwyth University added:

“This is the third year of this exciting event and Aberystwyth University is pleased to be a core partnership player. Health, exercise and wellbeing are integral to our teaching and research strategies, as is contributing to the vibrancy of the local and regional economy. Now expanded into the Aber Cycle Fest, we are looking forward to a weekend where there is something for everyone”.

The elite Tour Series race takes place on Friday evening, coming at the end of a full day of support races and community events on Aberystwyth Promenade.

“Aberystwyth plays an important role as a learning and administrative hub within Wales as well as being a popular tourist destination and so what better way to show off the town’s attractions than to have a national televised sporting event like The Tour Series come and visit us once again to race along our famous promenade.

“As the town’s commercial strap line says, there is ‘Something for Everyone’ in Aberystwyth, and so we’ve added two extra days to this year’s festival so that cyclists from all walks of life can come along and watch or take part to see what the county of Ceredigion has to offer as a genuine cycling destination” – says Aberystwyth Cycling Partnership’s Shelley Childs.

Spectators are then being encouraged to stay on in Aberystwyth and make the most of their Bank Holiday weekend, with an action packed downhill mountain bike race taking place on Constitution Hill on the Saturday before the Welsh Wild West sportive on Sunday offers a choice of three routes through the stunning local Ceredigion countryside.

“Friday night’s Tour Series race will be the perfect way to kick start an action packed weekend of cycling in the most spectacular way possible.”
