Pearl Izumi Tour Series champion Tobyn Horton has been voted the ITV Channel Islands Sports Personality of the Year 2013.

Horton, from Guernsey, was a member of Team UK Youth, who won seven rounds of Britain’s leading cycle race Series last May and June.

Tobyn – the first professional cyclist from the Channel Islands, was recognised for a successful year which included winning The Pearl Izumi Tour Series with the former team of Nigel Mansell, UK Youth and the road race and criterium at the Island Games in Bermuda.

There was also a win on home roads in the IAG Guernsey Grand Prix in September.

Now riding for Madison Genesis, Horton will be looking to replicate his success this year during the Series that visits ten town and city centres from 13th May – 13th June, with the final round being held in the Channel Islands, on Jersey.

Commenting on the prospect of the Series concluding in the Channel Islands, Horton said;

“I’m really excited for The Pearl Izumi Tour Series coming to Jersey. As close to actual home for me as possible without being on my own little Island of Guernsey across the water. I’m hoping having recently won the Channel Islands SPOTY award it will help raise the profile of the event itself, but also give people first-hand experience who may have not had the opportunity to see what I do for a living! It will no doubt be a cracking weekend of events for all involved and I for one am looking forward to it.”

For the first time The Pearl Izumi Tour Series will be coming to the Channel Island’s with Jersey hosting the final round on Friday 13th June. The grand finale will kick off proceedings in the Jersey Festival of Cycling 13th-15th June.

The festival boasts something for everyone with an abundance of cycling activities including a Pearl Izumi Tour Ride sportive on Saturday 14th June. You can join the pro’s and other guests in a 50 or 100-kilometre loop around the island, starting and finishing in Gorey.
